Some jobs start as a hole in a floor in a new build. Most start with a builder-grade staircase that's been walked on for thirty years. Either way Ben builds a staircase that's solid underfoot, quiet, and worth the money it adds back to the house.

Hardwood treads
The species changes how it looks and how it wears.
If you're going hardwood, the species sets the colour, the grain and how the treads hold up to traffic. Ben brings real samples so you're not choosing off a screen.

- Open grain that takes stain evenly, in red or white. Hard-wearing underfoot.
- Maple
- Tight, near-uniform grain. Reads clean and contemporary.
- Walnut
- Deep chocolate tones straight out of the tree, no stain needed.
- Hickory
- Strong colour variation board to board, and the hardest of the bunch.
- Cherry
- Warm red-brown that deepens with age and light.
Stained & finished offsite
No stain fumes in the house for a week.
Staining a staircase in place means sanding dust through the house and solvent smell in the bedrooms upstairs. Ben stains and finishes the woodwork in his shop instead, so it arrives ready to install. You get a more even finish, and you get your house back sooner.

The National Building Code, 2023 Alberta Edition sets requirements for stairs and for the railings that go with them, covering things like railing height, spindle spacing and a graspable handrail. Ben builds to the current requirements and will tell you what your particular staircase needs before anything gets cut.

The things people ask Ben first.
Do you build new staircases, or only replace existing ones?
Both. Ben builds new staircases from a bare opening, and he rebuilds or replaces tired ones in existing homes. Send a photo of what you have and he will tell you which route makes sense.
What can the treads be made from?
Hardwood, laminate or engineered flooring components. In hardwood the usual choices are oak, maple, walnut, hickory or cherry, and each takes stain differently and wears differently underfoot, so Ben brings samples to the consultation and the hardwood selection guide compares them side by side.
Who stains and finishes the staircase?
Ben does, himself, in his own shop rather than in your hallway. The woodwork arrives ready to install, which keeps the fumes and the sanding dust out of your home and gives a more consistent finish than brushing it out on site.
Do you build staircases outside Edmonton?
Yes. Ben serves Edmonton plus Leduc, Spruce Grove, Sherwood Park, Fort Saskatchewan and St. Albert. If you are a little further out, call and ask.
Can I keep my staircase and only change the treads?
Often, yes. Re-treading replaces the surfaces you walk on and see while the structure underneath stays, which is a smaller job than a full rebuild. Whether it suits your stairs depends on what is under the existing treads, so send a photo and Ben will tell you.
Will the new staircase match my railing?
Ben builds both, so they are planned together rather than ordered from two different trades and hoped to match. The treads, posts, spindles and handrail are specified as one package, with the stain and finish applied to all of it in the same shop.
Do you build exterior stairs or deck stairs?
No. Ben works on interior stairs and railings only, so no exterior stairs, decks or fences. If your project is outside, he is not the right trade for it and will say so rather than take the job.
